I Walked by Night

The life story, written by himself, of a famous Norfolk Poacher who in his day played many parts, house boy, shepherd, horse-breaker, mill hand, gamekeeper, and rat-catcher to the troops! From the time when, as a child, he went to prison and the tread-mill for snaring a rabbit, he lived, except for short intervals, "agin the law." The book is a wonderfull insight into a time  that is past, the day of child labour and wise women, of smugglers and transportation. He tells the secrets of his trade, for he says - "It don't matter now, I can't play the game no more." It is a storehouse of local lore and ballad, of magic charms and tales of animals and birds, of men and matters ranging from Norfolk to Ireland and the North. Above all, it is the history of a man's life, of his loves, his hates, and his deeds, told without reserve, with humour, and a rare philosophy.

Illustrated by the well-known Norfolk artists Mr, Edward Seago, I Walked by Night, is a book for all lovers of the countryside and its many ramifications, whether as a gift or as an addition to the collectors' library or simply as an entertainment.

The Old Lodge featured as the mystery house in season 22 episode 39 of Escape to the Country first broadcast in 2021 not long after we had moved in.
